Rhododendron Trek to Gantok



Day 01: Kathmandu to Gangtok, Sikkim (1600m):
Fly to Biratnagar or arrive by air at Bagdogra (India). Drive to Gangtok. Overnight stay in Gangtok.

Day 02: Gangtok (1600m):
AM: Visit Enchey Monastery, Government Institute of Cottage, Dodrul Chorten, Research Institute of Tibetology and Himalayan Zoological Park.
PM: Visit Rumtek Monastery situated 24 kms from the city. The monastery was built by the late Gyalwa Karmapa, the head of the Kagyu sect.
Overnight stay in hotel.

Day 03: Gangtok to Hilley and Versey (2,840m):
Drive to Hilley which lies in the south west and then trek for four kilometers through a lush forest of silver firs, hemlocks, magnolia and rhododendron. It takes almost one hour to reach Versey.

Day 04: Rest day at Versey:
The day is spent exploring the beautiful panoramic view of Chiwabhanjang on the Singalila range. Far below the village of Burik shops can distinctly be seen.

Day 05: Versey to Damthang andPemayangtse:
In the early morning walk downhill to Damthang through a thick forest in the Tendong Forest Sanctuary. In the near darkness of the forest rays of sunlight filter through the thick canopy of trees. Insects trill and rasp, leaves whisper, little creatures walk below leaving a ripple of rustlings and birds whistle their territorial claims. In the afternoon drive to Pemayangtse monastery. It is the most important monastery of the Nyingmapa order and was first built as a small temple in the late 17th century by Latsun Chembo. The monastery houses numerous religious idols and other objects of worship.

Day 06: Pemayangtse to Khecheopalri lake.
Drive to Khecheopalri Lake which is situated at an altitude of about 6,000 ft. Khecheopalri means ‘wishing lake’. The water in this lake is placid and crystal clear. It is considered very sacred by the Sikkimese. Then a short walk to Sanga Cholling monastery (2km/45 min.). It is considered the oldest monastery in Sikkim and lies amidst a thick forested hilltop opposite the Pemayantse monastery to the west. Overnight stay in hotel.

Day 07: Pemayangtse to Siliguri
Drive back to Siliguri via Teesta River.

Day 08: Siliguri to Biratnagar – (150km):
Drive back to Nepal (Biratnagar) for your flight to Kathmandu.

TOUR COST INCLUDES: Accommodation on twin sharing basis as per tour category (standard/Deluxe), full board meals, ground transfers, sightseeing as per itinerary with English speaking guide, entrance fees and permits.

On treks: Camping equipment consisting of two-man tent and mattress, freshly cooked meals, dining and toilet tents, ponies and trek staff. A minimum of 2 persons is required for obtaining permits to trek in Sikkim.

TOUR COST EXCLUDES: Air fare, personal expenses, travel insurance and re-entry visa.

Visa: All foreigners intending to visit Sikkim have to have an Indian visa which can be obtained at any Indian Embassy or Mission abroad. The inner state permit, which is also a must, can be obtained along with the visa.
